Job Description:
Attorneys in the Criminal Division, Special Prosecution Section
(SPS), uphold the Attorney General's constitutional responsibility
to represent the People of California in criminal investigatory,
pre-trial, and trial matters. The SPS Supervising Deputy Attorney
General is a working supervisor who, under the general supervision
of the Senior Assistant Attorney General (SAAG), the Chief
Assistant Attorney General (CAAG), the Chief Deputy Attorney
General (CDAG), and the Attorney General, organizes, monitors, and
directs a team of professionals, including attorneys, paralegals,
and auditors, working in the criminal prosecution of complex
matters often involving various forms of fraud, AB 1506
officer-involved shooting incidents, tax and underground economy
violations, organized retail theft, fentanyl trafficking, human &
labor trafficking, and political integrity.
The SDAG in the Special Prosecution Section will be responsible for
developing case strategy and tactics in complicated criminal
litigation matters, as well as personally performing the most
difficult and complex work of the section, thereby demonstrating
high a level of subject matter expertise and independent judgement.
SDAGs will be responsible for reviewing the legal writing,
memorandum and communications of the individuals they supervise.
The SDAGs in SPS will be responsible for reviewing and making
affirmative recommendations on all significant actions in criminal
proceedings, including but not limited to, the initiation of
criminal proceedings, the settlement of cases, and the presentation
of matters to judge or juries. SDAGs may be called upon to act as
the lead attorney on a team assigned to the most difficult and
complex cases within the SPS section.
Special Prosecution sections SDAGs may be called upon to advise
various legal jurisdictions, public officials and representatives
of public agencies on legal issues and legislation; to assist with
responses to the public; to conduct or supervise special
investigations of the most sensitive, confidential, or difficult
nature; or to draft and analyze legislative measures and
regulations. SDAGs may be called on to train attorneys, staff, and
law enforcement partners in particularized areas of the law. SDAGs
will be expected to thoroughly and competently handle all
administrative and managerial tasks including, but not limited to
the hiring, onboarding, and performing performance reviews of
staff, organizing and managing work flow in an equitable and
efficient manner, and reporting on the status of cases,
investigations, and personnel within the chain of management, in
adherence the policies and procedures of the Department of
Justice.
The work of the Special Prosecution Section SDAG is challenging and
requires an extensive knowledge of criminal law. Excellent
research, writing, organizational, and interpersonal skills are
essential.
The position may require travel to supervise staff and to fully
participate in investigations and prosecutions in other
locations.
